Scrape, a 16-piece string orchestra known for performing the music of composers Eyvind Kang and Jim Knapp, will be joined by Seattle jazz star Bill Frisell for a show on Vashon.

The concert, slated for 8 p.m. Saturday at Open Space for Arts & Community, will feature Frisell’s orchestral compositions in one part of the evening and his playing in another. Known internationally as one of the foremost jazz guitarists alive today, Frisell has garnered acclaim in recent years for his work as a composer and band leader.

“It’s hard to find a more fruitful meditation on American music than in the compositions of guitarist Bill Frisell,” said an article in The New York Times.

“Mixing rock and country with jazz and blues, he’s found what connects them: improvisation and a sense of play. Unlike other pastichists, who tend to duck passion, Mr. Frisell plays up the pleasure in the music and also takes on another often avoided subject, tenderness.”

The concerts will also feature compositions by Kang and Knapp. Kang, a Vashon resident, is also an internationally lauded composer and instrumentalist who won 2011’s prestigious Arts Innovator Award, given by the Seattle nonprofit Artist Trust.

Knapp, co-composer for Scrape and director of the Jim Knapp Orchestra, is a trumpet player, composer and teacher who has won wide acclaim as a composer, performer and recording artist.

Soloists for the evening will include Kang on viola and the vocalists Jessika Kinney and Jay Clayton. Heather Bentley will be the concertmaster for the evening.
