Despite an autumn chill, some 200 Islanders gathered Saturday to sample 16 pumpkin pies and desserts at the Village Green — with four discerning judges determining the winner in the annual contest. This year, there were two categories — traditional pumpkin pie and non-traditional pumpkin dessert — with bakers asked to focus on local ingredients. Grabbing the title for best traditional pie was Shannon Seath Meyer, above, who used a home-grown sugar pie pumpkin in her concoction. Nancy Foster-Moss took first place in the non-traditional category with her “Pumpkin Bourbon Cheesecake” — described by Beachcomber blogger Karen Dale as “gooey-piggy-creamy-lush-scrumptious.” Judging this year’s contest were Island farmer Jasper Forrester, Island farmer Karen Biondo, Lisa Cyra, a pastry chef, and Kate Baehr, principal of Chautauqua Elementary School.
