A slew of upcoming events shines a spotlight on Vashon’s bounty

Wine, songs and films liven up Luna

Lunavision will present a free screening of the hard-hitting documentary “Food, Inc.” from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday, April 8, at Café Luna.

“Food, Inc.” reveals shocking truths about what Americans eat and how it is produced, according to Lunavision. The film includes interviews with authors Eric Schlosser (“Fast Food Nation”) and Michael Pollan (“The Omnivore’s Dilemma”) as well as other farming innovators and entrepreneurs.

The Diggers, an Island band comprised of Camille Coldeen, Nick Simmons and David and Danny Salonen, will perform at 7:30 p.m. Friday, April 9, at the café. The same evening there will also be a wine tasting with Vashon Winery’s Ron Irvine from 6 to 8 p.m.

Tamara Lewis will perform a free concert at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, April 10, at Café Luna. Lewis is a Seattle singer and songwriter who writes in a contemporary folk style.

The Havurah shows an Islander’s film

Havurat Ee Shalom will mark Yom HaShoah, the Holocaust Remembrance, at 4:30 p.m. Sunday April 11, with a screening of Gabriel Judet-Weinshel’s documentary film, “Child of Madness.”

Judet-Weinshel grew up on Vashon and now lives in New York, where he has drawn increasing acclaim as a director of photography and director of music videos, documentaries and short films.

He is also known as a singer and songwriter, and recently returned to the Island to perform at the Blue Heron.

Judet-Weinshel made “Child of Madness” when he was in the eighth-grade at McMurray Middle School. The film is a tribute and document of the life of his step-grandmother, Jenny Weinshel, a Holocaust survivor.

‘Revenge of the Dinosaur Lady’ promises laughs

Drama Dock is gearing up to present the U.S. premiere of “The Revenge of the Dinosaur Lady,” a new comedy by Mary Humphrey Baldridge. The play tells the story of a romance novelist in the midst of a crisis sparked by the reappearance of her ex-husband.

The show is a family affair — it is directed by Baldridge’s daughter, Elizabeth Ripley, a well-known Island performer who has staged and appeared in plays and operas on the Island.

Ripley’s daughters, Madelaine and Lillian Ripley, have also contributed to the play as fight choreographer and costume designer, respectively. Cast members include Antonia Greene, Chris Ott, David Hackett, Jill Bulow, Meme Garcia and Kenese Parker.

The show will run April 16 through April 25 at Vashon High School. There are 7:30 p.m. performances on April 16, 17, 22, 23 and 24; 4 p.m. performances on April 18 and 25, and a 2 p.m. show on April 24. Kids have fun with Gilbert and Sullvan

Almost 20 members of Vashon Island Youth Chorus, ages 6 to 13, will bring “Pinafore Pirates,” a Gilbert and Sullivan-style musical spoof, to the Blue Heron stage at 7:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday, April 16 and 17, and 4 p.m. Sunday, April 18.

The young performers will portray characters from “The Mikado,” “HMS Pinafore,” “Pirates of Penzance,” “Princess Ida” and “Iolanthe.”

The group has rehearsed since January under the direction of Marita Ericksen, assisted by student director Max Lopuszynski. Libbie Anthony, who has directed many Gilbert and Sullivan shows, consulted with Ericksen and the cast during the rehearsal process.

“Pinafore Pirates” includes choreography, costumes, speaking parts and more than a dozen upbeat, humorous songs.

Acclaimed singer comes to Sound Food

A concert by singer/songwriter Claudia Schmidt will take place at 7:30 p.m. Friday, April 16, at Sound Food.

Schmidt has appeared on “Prairie Home Companion” and at countless venues over the course of her decades-long career.
