Arts around town

Author reading

Carey Hunter Davis will read from her new book of poetry, “The A Poems,” at 6 p.m. Thursday at the Vashon Bookshop.

The poems are related by title, so the subjects vary greatly, but all the poems arise out of Davis’ keen observations.

Hits of the Eighties

Vashon Events will host “Hits of the Eighties” at 8 p.m. Friday at the Red Bike.

The evening is a fundraiser and will showcase music of the decade performed by island musicians.

Proceeds will support Vashon Events., a community arts, culture and charity events website run by islanders Pete Welch and Allison Shirk.

CD and music video release

A CD release and music video screening of Ike Harmon’s “These Mansions Made of Sky” will be held from 1 to 3 p.m. Saturday at the Vashon Theatre.

Five years in the making, the CD was written, recorded, mixed and mastered, and the video shot, on Vashon with all island talent.

The screening will include a free CD and free popcorn. The film of the 12-song CD runs for an hour. Tickets are $25 at the door, and children under age 10 are free.

Slack-key guitarist returns to Vashon

World-class slack-key guitarist Makana will return to the island for a show at the Vashon Theatre at 4 p.m. Sunday. This will be Makana’s fifth performance on Vashon but his first in the Vashon Theatre.

His single acoustic guitar often sounds like three as he plays a traditional Hawaiian slack-key style infused with elements of bluegrass. This time, he will perform with a new voice — Estrella.

Tickets are $20 in advance; $25 at the door; and sold at vashontheatre.com and at the theater box office.
