“Nights of Grief and Mystery”

Author and activist Stephen Jenkinson and recording artist Gregory Hoskins will fuse their work together in an evening described as “part book reading, part concert, part poetry, part lamentation, part ribaldry, and part lifting the mortal veil and learning the mysteries there,” to take place at 7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 27, at Vashon Center for the Arts (VCA).

Michael Whitmore performs

Islander Michael Whitmore, a nylon string guitarist, occasional vocalist, and the leader and composer of Vashon’s jazz ensemble Some’tet, will perform a solo show from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, Oct. 28, at Vashon Brewing Community Pub.

“The Witching Hour” at VCA

A Halloween-themed fundraising event for Pacific Northwest Cabaret Association (PNWCA) will take place at 5 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 30, at VCA.

The evening will feature top Seattle cabaret performers (see “Halloween in High Style” page 6) and be hosted by New York Cabaret Bistro Award winner Arnaldo! Drag Chanteuse. At the event, a best costume prize winner will win two prizes to the opening night of the Seattle Cabaret Festival on May 6, 2023, at the Triple Door, in Seattle.

Bruce Phares Birthday Bash

Vashon-based jazz bassist Bruce Phares, who had been hosting VCA’s popular jazz series “The Jam In The Atrium” with multiple guest artists, will be celebrating his birthday by hosting a fun and laughter-filled concert, featuring a number of his favorite Seattle musicians along with some of Vashon’s stellar musician friends.

The jazz party is scheduled for 7 p.m. Friday, Nov. 4, at VCA, and will include Seattle jazz great Jeremy Bacon on piano. Get tickets and find out more at vashoncenterforthearts.org. Admission is free for youth under the age of 18.

Alchemy The Band to play for VYFS

A fundraiser for Vashon Youth & Family Services, at 6 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 5, will feature Alchemy The Band — fresh off a recent victory in a Battle of the Bands contest where judges called the group “The Sound of Vashon.”

Band embers include Elaine Rocheford on vocals, melodica and percussion, Rick Doussett on vocals and guitar, Chris O’Brien on keys, and Arlette Moody on vocals, percussion and ukulele.

“Buddy—The Buddy Holly Story”

Drama Dock will present “Buddy – The Buddy Holly Story,” an acclaimed musical that won multiple top theater awards, at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Friday and Saturday, Nov. 10-12, and 2 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 12.

The show features more than 20 of Holly’s greatest hits, including “Peggy Sue,” “That’ll Be the Day,” “Everyday” and “Raining in My Heart.”

The 5th Avenue Theatre star, Billy Joe Huels, will reprieve his role as Buddy Holly, backed by a band of musician-actors, including Vashon’s Gavin Kovite, Matt Wilson, Kelly Van Camp, Nancy Lee Spears and Dianne Kutzke. Carrie Perna will co-star as Holly’s love interest and wife, Maria-Elena, and Franco Weaver will make his Vashon debut as Ritchie Valens.
