Patterson Hood returns to Vashon

Debra Heesch and Vashon Center for the Arts will present Patterson Hood in concert at 7:30 p.m. Monday, Dec. 19, at VCA.

Hood is a revered rocker who is best known as front-man, singer, songwriter and guitar player for the critically acclaimed band Drive-By Truckers, but he is also a writer of essays, columns and short stories, as well as a solo performer and producer. Purchase tickets at vashoncenterforthearts.org.

Holiday fun at Vashon Theatre

A big-screen tradition for many islanders will return at 1 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 18, when the classic holiday film, “It’s a Wonderful Life,” starring Jimmy Stewart, will have a screening at Vashon Theatre. Another tradition will return at 6 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 20, when the theater hosts a community caroling event. Visit vashontheatre.com for more information.

Visit 17th-century Holland

An upcoming art history talk, with scholar Rebecca Albiani, will focus on a wintry wonderland — early 17th-century Holland, as depicted in the paintings of Henrick Avercamp.

Albiani’s talk, at 11:30 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 21, will detail how Avercamp (1585-1634) pioneered the new genre of landscape, specializing in busy winter scenes packed with activity.
