U.S. Rep to attend film
Vashon Film Society and For Word Films will present “Fuel” at 7 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 7, at Vashon Theatre.
A 12-year work-in-progress, the documentary film is directed by Josh Tickell, who set out in a van powered by recycled vegetable oil to prove that there are viable alternatives to a world dependent on fossil fuels. The film won the Best Documentary audience award at Sundance Film Festival.
Congressman Jay Inslee, who is interviewed in the film, will attend and answer questions.
Admission is by donation.
Drama Dock auditions
Drama Dock will hold auditions in the high school band room (Building F, next to the tennis courts) for two musicals, “Honk” and “Urinetown,” from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 13 and noon to 4 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 14.
“Honk” will be presented April 10 to 26. It has seven leading roles for men and eight leading roles for women, for high-school aged to senior actors. There are chorus roles for all ages from elementary school students to adults.
“Urinetown” will be presented July 16 to 20. It has a cast of 20, with roles for ages ranging from teens to seniors of both genders. There are six leading roles and an active chorus.
Actors can audition for one or both musicals and may bring a song with sheet music for the pianist. Actors may also present a one-minute memorized monologue. Actors may also come to the audition without prepared materials.

Listen and learn at the music store
Mark Graham and Orville Johnson will return to Vashon Island Music Studio on Saturday, Dec. 6, for a full day of workshops and a performance. Graham will teach a harmonica workshop from 10 a.m. to noon, and Johnson will lead a slide guitar workshop from 1 to 3 p.m. Workshops cost $25. At the end of the day Graham and Johnson will return for a concert at 7 p.m. Tickets for the concert are $15. Space is limited, and registration is required. Call 463-0552.
Free shows fill the Red Bike
Music fans can enjoy a weekend full of free shows at Red Bicycle Bistro & Sushi.
Olivia De La Cruz, Robyn Landis and Mark Wells will perform an all-ages show from 7 to 9:30 p.m. Friday, Dec. 5. De La Cruz is an up-and-coming singer and songwriter who is currently working on her second CD. Wells and Landis are well-known Island musicians who join forces a few times a year to share harmonies and favorite tunes.
At 9:30 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 6, two bands will share the bill in a show for ages 21 and older. Red Jacket Mine, a four-person band led by songwriter Lincoln Barr, will play first, followed by Nathan Wade & The Dark Pioneers.
Nathan Wade is a fixture on the Island, having performed several solo shows here, including opening for Ian Moore and his band. Wade’s publicity materials describe the band’s sound as “a cinematic trip down a desolate highway as the dashboard rattles apart and the truck radio blasts songs of murder, drug abuse and Biblical arcana.”
Bob’s Your Uncle will wrap up the Bike’s musical weekend from 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 7, with an all-ages show.
Band members include Rochelle Wolfe, Ken Larsen, Bruce Haulman, Paul Colwell, Randy Bruce and Wilson Abbott. Instruments include banjo, guitar, upright bass, mandolin, fiddle and dobro.
