Asparagus film in Lunavision
Lunavision will present a free screening of “Asparagus, Stalking the Wild Life,” at 7 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 13, at Café Luna.
The film, directed by Anne de Mare and Kirsten Kelly, explores the world of Oceana County, Mich, the so-called Asparagus Capital of the World. Scenes chronicle an asparagus festival, various collections of asparagus apparel and dinnerware and a high school classroom experiment about the effects of asparagus on the human digestive system. The film also takes a look at how the global economy and the war on drugs are threatening to bankrupt what seemed to be Oceana County’s lock on an edible niche market.
Learn music improv
Vashon musician and instructor Ken Jacobsen will give a workshop on basic improvisation from noon to 3 p.m. Saturday Nov. 15, at Vashon Island Music Studio. Topics will include the pentatonic scales, modes of the major scale and playing over various common chord progressions in different musical styles. Bring your guitar, bass or other instrument — the class will include basic theory in addition to plenty of playing, with the goal of finding your individual voice improvisationally through various musical exercises. Vocals and guitar at Café Luna
Café Luna will be the scene of two lively concerts this weekend.
At 7:30 p.m. Friday, Nov. 14, instrumental guitarist Jonathan Nicholson will perform.
Nicholson has five albums to his credit, including his latest, “Calliope’s End.” He has performed in concert with such well-known musicians as David Lanz and Hans York and has sold CDs in more than seven countries. At 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 15, Seattle songwriter Alicia Healey will perform with Lisa Mills and Laurie Miller. The trio includes vocals, harmonica and electric guitar.
Healy spent several years with the acoustic country/folk group Rodeo Lagoon, a group well-known in the Pacific Northwest for its arrangements of folk and bluegrass songs.
There is no cover charge for the performances at Café Luna.
Accordions at Heron
A Seattle based quartet, Hell’s Bellows! will perform at 8 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 22, at the Blue Heron Art Center.
The group formed in 2006 to “bring the gospel of accordion chaos from Seattle, Washington to the world at large,” according to its MySpace page.
The band’s repertoire ranges from contemporary classical to gypsy/Eastern European, and four-part harmony vocals add even more texture to their performances. Hell’s Bellows! plays mostly all original music.
Collectively, the quartet has played for 47 years and in concert touched nearly 700 buttons and keys, from Bumbershoot to Carnegie Hall and beyond.

Bike hosts Ari Joshua
Ari Joshua and Friends will play a free concert at Red Bicycle Bistro & Sushi at 9:30 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 15.
Ari Joshua Zucker, who played Island Earthfair in 2005, is a South African-born musician who melds jazz, rock and groove styles.
He performed at the Showbox last week with Seattle music legends Tom Morello (Rage Against The Machine), Stone Gossard and Mike McCready (Pearl Jam).
He trained and played in New York with such jazz legends as Wynton Marsalis, Rashied Ali, Kenny Barron and Reggie Workman.
This show is for ages 21 and older only.
