Comedy smackdown
After three weeks of touring and 19 shows, five comedians are left in the 29th Annual Seattle Comedy Competition, and they are coming to the Island to joke it out in the 29th Annual Seattle Comedy Competition finals.
The finals take place at 8 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 26, at Vashon Theatre.

Poetry salon on Kenya
A poetry salon will take place at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 3, at Vashon Bookshop.
The theme, in tribute to the heritage of President-elect Obama, is the poets and poetry of Kenya.
Organizers urge participants to read, research and come prepared to be part of a lively evening.

Ceili dance
Vashon Celtic Dance Society invites Islanders to work off their Thanksgiving dinners from 7 to 10 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 29, at the Grange Hall.
The society will host a community Irish Ceili dance with music by the Vashon Ceili Band — Martin Nyberg, Marilyn Kleyn and Steve Austin.
Seattle dancer and caller Kathleen O’Grady-Graham will teach and call the dances. No partner or experience is required.
The suggested donation is $8 or $6 for students and seniors. The Grange Hall is located in the ferry dock parking lot at the north end of the Island.

‘Hot Flashes’ on VoV
Susan McCabe’s one-woman show, “Hot Flashes, Cold Showers,” which was presented in October at the Blue Heron Art Center as part of Vashon Allied Arts’ New Works series, is now available on Voice of Vashon TV (Comcast cable channel 21).
The show will air at 7:32 p.m. Tuesday and Friday, Dec. 2 and 5.
Church at the Bike
The second public performance and broadcast of The Church of Great Rain is at 7 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 30, at Red Bicycle Bistro & Sushi.
Islanders can come to the show, or listen to Voice of Vashon’s broadcast online at www.voiceofvashon.org.
The Church of Great Rain is a group of Island performers who aspire to be the Pacific Northwest’s answer to “A Prairie Home Companion.”
The Church of Great Rain will perform services at the Bike the last Sunday of each month.
According to organizers, the program includes “a not-very-well-considered sermon, short stories, rumors and truth about Islanders and Island living, supported by original songs and a weird cast of Island characters to raise everyone’s spirits for the week ahead.”
The evening is free.
See holiday films free
Vashon Film Society is hosting a holiday film extravaganza at 5:30 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 6, at Vashon Park District’s Ober Park building.
“A Christmas Story,” followed by “One Magic Christmas,” will be screened, and cookies, popcorn and drinks will be served. This family-friendly event is free.
