Jam in the Atrium

“Return to Chick Corea,” a Northwest jazz supergroup, will perform the legendary jazz pianist Chick Corea’s compositions from 1-3 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 7, in the atrium of Vashon Center for the Arts.

The free performance is part of the ongoing “Jazz in the Atrium” series, led by island impresario and bassist Bruce Phares.

Co-led by Phares, the quartet will also include Francesco Crosara (piano), Alexey Nikolaev (sax), and Mark Ivester (drums). Pianist Crosara was a friend and protege of Corea’s during his later years and exhibits an uncanny similar edge and style to Corea’s playing on the keyboards. Sax-wizard Nikolaev is one of the most in-demand soloists in the region, as is award-winning percussion-master Ivester. Together, the quartet promises reverence and passion for the masterful songs in the late and legendary pianist’s songbook.

Islanders are urged to show up earlier to get a good seat, in front.

Claudia Schmidt in concert

Vashon singer and songwriter Kat Eggleston will present an artist she calls one of her favorite musicians in the world, Claudia Schmit, in concert at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 18, at the Vashon Havurah, at 15401 Westside Hwy SW.

Schmidt has recorded 22 albums in a storied, almost four-decade career as a traveling troubadour, songwriter, recording artist and muse to other musicians. Find out more about her work, and take a listen, at claudiaschmidt.com.

“To say that Schmidt is simply a performer with a talent to entertain would be a miscarriage of understatement,” said the Door County (Wisconsin) Advocate. “Schmidt takes her audiences into her world as easily as the child who discovers the endless universes that exist in a cardboard box.”

“When Claudia sings a song, it stays sung,” said Garrison Keillor.

Tickets to her show cost $20 at the door. Contact kat@kateggleston.com for reservations and details.
