Church of Great Rain blows its horn

As the deadline approaches to file tax returns, the Church of Great Rain will offer Islanders “Comic Relief for Taxing Times” this weekend.

As the deadline approaches to file tax returns, the Church of Great Rain will offer Islanders “Comic Relief for Taxing Times” this weekend.

Musical guest Baby Gramps will join the church house band and the Holy Roller Radio Players for 90 minutes of mirth and music themed around the certainties of the season — spring and taxes.

Baby Gramps will come armed with a steel guitar and a voice that’s been described as “the love child of Louis Armstrong and Walter Brennan.”

Besides the usual comedy hijinks, this month’s church services will include an appearance by pop duo “Sunny and Share,” haikus for spring from Island poet Ann Spiers and an opportunity for audience members to send messages into space.

The show starts at 4 p.m. Sunday, April 11, at Open Space for Arts & Community. Doors open at 3 p.m. Admission is $5 at the door. Kids are free, but church organizers say this month’s show is rated PG-13.
