Creative outlets for all ages abound at Vashon Allied Arts; classes in dance, clay, drawing, music and metal arts start now.

Vashon Island Youth Chorus, junior and advanced, begins this month under the direction of Marita Ericksen. There is space in the kindergarten through fourth-grade group, which will rehearse for Disney’s “Aristocats Kids” from 3:30 to 5:15 p.m. Mondays, and started Jan. 26. Participants will learn the art of song, two- and three-part harmony, choreography and speaking parts for performances April 17 to 19 at the Blue Heron Art Center.

Vocalists in grades five through eight will focus on world music with Ericksen and guest musician Paul Colwell. The world music class meets from 3:15 to 5 p.m. Thursdays beginning Jan. 29. The ensemble will also perform at the Heron April 17 to 19.

Clay classes are under way or about to start for all ages at Blue Heron Pottery. The pottery co-op is scheduling now for January through March. Call Amy Kitchener at 463-2921 or VAA at 463-5131 for more information.

Kids’ clay class will dream of spring with sun plaques, butterflies, frogs, slab planters and more. Children 6 to 10 will learn from one of the Island’s favorite potters, Liz Lewis, from 3:30 to 5 p.m. Wednesdays, starting today.

A clay basic workshop for teens to adults with Lewis covers the basics (including wheel time and raku) and offers independent work time. The class, from 7 to 9

p.m. Thursdays, starts tomorrow.

Blue Heron Dance begins a new semester Feb. 2. Students ages 3 to adult can participate in ballet, modern or fusion with teachers Christine Juarez, Jill Adomaitis and Rebecca Schroeder.

The spring performance, Tchaikovsky’s “Serenade,” will take place May 8 to 10 at Vashon High School. Younger dancers in the company will perform the delightful “Carnival of Animals” by the romantic composer Camille Saint-Saëns.

Yearning to paint? Donna Botten will teach teens to adults, beginners to intermediate, how to paint beautiful watercolors. Class meets 7 to 9 p.m. Mondays starting Feb. 2.

A metal arts workshop with David Erue will teach plasma cutter and welding techniques to create original metal sculpture. The workshop meets noon to 3 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 31 and Feb. 7, in Erue’s studio.
