Teens can find creative outlets — from Glass Camp to Summer Stage, to photography and dance — at Vashon Allied Arts’ summer programs.

Instructors Brian and Tara Brenno will teach the wonders of glass by guiding teens through a series of demonstrations and hands-on exercises about the different ways to work with glass. Projects include glass blowing, glass casting, glass fusing and mosaic. Students will complete many small projects and forge a foundation for future glass projects.

Glass Camp takes place at the Brenno glass studio. Bring a sack lunch, sunglasses and comfortable clothing. Session one, for grades six to eight, runs from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday through Friday, July 21 to 25. Session two, for grades nine to 12, is 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday through Friday, Aug. 18 to 22.

Blue Heron dance and movement camps for teen dancers start in July.

Intermediate Ballet Camp (Ballet 4, 5, 6) meets from 6:30 to 8 p.m., Tuesdays and Thursdays, July 8 to Aug. 21.

Pointe Camp will also meet from 8 to 8:30 p.m., Tuesdays and Thursdays, July 8 to Aug. 21, in the Blue Heron Dance studio. Instructors are Jill Adomaitis and Christine Juarez.

No passport is required for Travels With Clay, which is the theme for a teen clay camp (for ages 11 to 15) the week of July 28 to 31. Under the guidance of Geri Seibert and Amy Kitchener, students will explore different cultures with unique hand-built or wheel-thrown projects. Campers can look forward to making their own Japanese sushi set and raku tea bowl, or creating a magical Mexican spirit mask.

Teen Summer Stage, for ages 14 to 18, will take place from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., Aug. 4 to 14, at the Blue Heron. Cornish College of the Arts theater graduate Noah Benezra will guide teens through physical theater games, improvisation exercises and more. Students will dramatize their own personal stories in a celebration of individuality, while learning new skills in a high-energy, supportive and growth-provoking theater environment. A final performance for invited guests and the public will take place at 7 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 14.

Benezra, who worked with Island teens last summer, holds a bachelor’s degree in theater, with an emphasis on original works. He recently taught theater classes the men’s Washington State prison at Monroe and worked with at-risk youth at Turtle Theatre Collective. Benezra is assistant director for Q.T.E.T., a Washington Ensemble Theatre teen theater program.

Marita Ericksen will teach Musical Theater Camp for ages 11 to 15, from 1 to 3 p.m. July 7 to 10, at Blue Heron Art Center. Participants will learn some of Broadway’s best practice vocal techniques and read two- to three-part harmony. The repertoire will include songs from “Newsies,” “Little Women,” “Hairspray,” “Into the Woods” and others.

For teens who want to get more out of their photography and have fun doing it, Teen Photo Camp, for ages 12 to 17, will be offered from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., Monday through Thursday, July 21 to 24. Professional photographers Ray Pfortner and Christine Beck will lead participants through critique shooting sessions around Island Center, Dockton Park, Fern Cove, Burton Acres and other Island locations. The camp is open to any teen with any type of digital camera, whether point-and-shoot or single lens reflex.

Art Camp for young teens, ages 10 to 14, is open from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., Aug. 11 to 15, at the Blue Heron. Campers will work with a different artist and medium each day, including glass bead-making with Virginia Sager and copper work with Ivonne Escobar de Kommer.
