Island authors will share their stories

Two authors will share excerpts from their books this weekend at events slated to take place at Books by the Way and Café Luna.

The first reading, scheduled from 3 to 4 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 13, at Books by the Way, will spotlight “Home Ownership: Welcome to Your Delightmare,” by Dr. Rayner, a pen name for Island illustrator Rayne Beaudoin.

“Home Ownership” — a charmingly illustrated and humorous book that Beaudoin is marketing as a gift for both first time home owners and veteran renovators of “fixer uppers” — is the author’s first book. He said that many people had encouraged him to try writing a book, but that ongoing projects with his house kept getting in his way. Finally, he added, he decided to combine the two efforts to create “Home Ownership.”

Beaudoin will read excerpts and sign copies of the book at the Books by the Way event.

Another local writer, Greg Wessel, will give a talk from 4 to 5 p.m., Sunday, Nov. 14, at Café Luna, about his book, “Codex Benthos: A Catalog of Lost Mines, Buried Treasures, Unsolved Mysteries, and Unexplained Oddities of Vashon and Maury Islands, Washington.”

Wessel also wrote his book under a pen name — Cecil Benthos, PhD. “Codex Benthos,” a fictional compenium of mysteries and treasures on Vashon, was launched in 2009 as part of a treasure hunt Wessel organized on the Island.

Wessel’s presentation will unearth clues to Vashon’s quirky history, share tips on treasure hunting and reveal the first clue in a new treasure hunt.
