Islanders invited to vote by e-mail for Vashon flag

Two Wall Gallery has announced a vote-by-e-mail run-off election following its May exhibition of designs for an official, and first-ever, Vashon flag.

Two Wall Gallery has announced a vote-by-e-mail run-off election following its May exhibition of designs for an official, and first-ever, Vashon flag.

The exhibit featured 41 different flag designs, all created by Islanders. However, according to exhibit curator Greg Wessel, neither the panel of five judges nor the 325 Islanders who cast their votes could come to a consensus on the best flag to represent Vashon.

“There were a lot of good designs, and unfortunately that meant that the votes were spread out among many entries,” Wessel said. “No single design got anywhere near a majority.”

So Wessel decided to “do as they would in politics,” he said. He identified the three top vote-getters and is holding a run-off election.

The three finalists in the competition are flags by Debra Paulsen, Judy Kullman and Adria Pontious. Islanders can cast their votes by e-mailing Wessel at twowallgallery@aol.com. Voting will be open until July 1.

“The one design that is chosen will be the official Vashon flag, at least for now,” Wessel said. He added that the exhibit and contest were such a success that he hopes to do them again.
