It’s ‘Nutcracker’ time

Blue Heron Dance Company will usher in the holiday season with its annual production of Tchaikovsky’s “Nutcracker” during the first weekend of December.

This year’s production will have a more contemporary look, with new choreography added by dance director Christine Juarez and the addition of new scenic elements by set designer Tony Furr.

The role of Clara will be danced by Ally Clevenger, and Camille Kappleman will portray the Sugar Plum Fairy. Quinn McTighe will perform the role of the Nutcracker Prince.

“I always like to insert something fresh, but the music and story line remain with tradition,” said Juarez.

This year, there will also be a special $5 performance for pre-schoolers at 3:30 p.m. Friday, Dec. 3.

“The Nutcracker” will be danced at Vashon High School at 7 p.m., Friday and Saturday, Dec. 3 and 4, and 1 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, Dec. 4 and 5. Saturday evening’s show includes pre-show live music at 6:30 p.m. Tickets, $10 and $13, are available at Thriftway, Island book stores, Blue Heron, Heron’s Nest, www.brownpapertickets.com or by calling 463-5131.
