As part of Vashon Allied Arts’ Jazz Series, acclaimed Seattle jazz vocalist and educator Greta Matassa will return to Vashon to teach an afternoon jazz singer clinic and hold an evening performance with her band on Saturday. The three-hour clinic will run from 1 to 4 p.m., and the performance will begin at 7:30 p.m. Both events will be held at the Blue Heron.

Growing up on Bainbridge Island, Matassa was influenced early on by her parents, who were big jazz fans. They encouraged Matassa’s interest in music, which gravitated toward singers from the 1930s and 40s, such as Ella Fitzgerald, Billie Holiday, Fred Astaire and Frank Sinatra.

Matassa’s clinic will cover style, phrasing, technique, improvisation, rhythm, new ways to treat melody and fresh approaches to favorite old standards. Other topics will include dynamics, harmony, scat and methods for overcoming performance anxiety.

Matassa is well known for her versatile, rhythmic sensibility, diverse repertoire and perfect pitch. She will be joined by longtime collaborators Darin Clendenin (piano), Clipper Anderson (bass) and Mark Ivester (drums).

Performance tickets are $16 for VAA members and students, $18 for seniors and $20 for general admission. The clinic costs $50 and will be limited to nine singers. Tickets are available at the Blue Heron and vashonalliedarts.com.
