Australian powerhouse brings tunes from down under
If you fancy rock, folk and blues with a dose of mischief, be sure to catch Asa Broomhall at The Bike at 9 p.m. Friday.
Broomhall, about to release his fifth album, is one of Australia’s top independent artists. His dynamic live show has taken him from local venues and festivals to tours with national and international artists.
Also on the bill Friday is Vashon’s own Danny Newcomb. Newcomb has performed with several popular bands and released records with both Atlantic and Epic records. He will perform new songs in the pop/rock genre with plenty of his trademark guitar.
Celtic duo makes stop on Vashon
Oregon Celtic harpist and multi-instrumentalist David Helfand and violist Justin Lader have returned to Seattle for their second tour sponsored by the King County Library System’s Many Voices, One Land performance series. And as part of the tour, the duo will perform their debut Vashon concert at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Methodist church.
Helfand and Lader perform on Celtic harp, mandocello, guitar and viola, playing an blend of original world music ranging from Celtic and Middle Eastern to Asian meditation and flamenco, plus music inspired by Helfand’s travels to Israel, Britain and beyond. Admission is free.
Art talk series continues
Tickets are still available for the next installment in VAA’s Art History Talks Series with art historian Rebecca Albiani at 11:30 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 12, at the Blue Heron. Albiani will discuss Camille Pissarro, the oldest member of the core Impressionist group.
Pissarro, who was dedicated to experimentation in art, depicted images of rural labor and mentored many younger painters, including Van Gogh.

Early Music Fest performs Handel
The Salish Sea Early Music Festival will continue next Wednesday with “Corelli and Handel’s Soprano,” featuring soprano Linda Tsatsanis, harpsichordist Jan Weinhold from Germany and baroque flutist Jeffrey Cohan.
The concert will celebrate Corelli’s 300th anniversary with two of his sonatas for violin and harpsichord and vocal works by Handel, including joyous and heart-wrenching selections from the “Nine German Arias” and the cantata “Lucrezia,” a dramatic portrayal of the legend of Lucretia.
The concert will take place at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 13, at Bethel Church. The suggested donation is $15 or $20. Kids 18 and under are free.
