In a playful spin on the popular Dreamworks movie “Shrek,” Vashon Allied Arts’ youth production of “Shrek Jr. The Musical” will call into question the nature of true love in two performances slated for this weekend.

Directed by Marita Ericksen, the Vashon Allied Arts’ production is a comedy that gently reveals the shallowness of outward appearances. A cast of 25 students in grades four through 12 will perform the rock and jazz songs in this 90-minute adaptation of the musical by Jeanine Tesori and David Lindsay-Abaire. The title character of Shrek will be played by Josiah Sprute-Boyajian, with Alivia Jones in the role of Princess Fiona. The sibling duo of Laura and Evan Erickson will play the wise-cracking donkey and narcissistic Lord Farquaad, respectively.

Betsy Frazee is in charge of costumes, while Mick Etchoe is stage manager. The show is suitable for all ages.

Showtimes are at 7 p.m. Saturday and 2 p.m. Sunday at the Vashon High School theater. Tickets are $15 for general admission, $10 for VAA members and seniors and $6 for students and are available at the Blue Heron, vashonalliedarts.org and at the door.
