From the Bard to Pete Seeger, Vashon’s Theatre Fest (VRT) will bring classics to Open Space for Arts & Community this month.

Shakespeare’s popular comedy “Much Ado About Nothing,” set in VRT’s production in the 1920s, will take advantage of the woods in the meadow at Open Space to stage the story of multiple misidentifications and misunderstandings in classic Shakespearean style.

Soldiers and nobles, misanthropes, and lovers plot to confound each other, creating a hilarious spectacle of hijinks and evil plots for the audience.

Co-produced with Open Space for Arts & Community, “Much Ado” will be performed at 6 p.m. on Thursday, July 21, Saturday, July 23, Friday, July 29, Saturday, July 30 and Sunday, July 31; and 3 p.m. Sunday, July 24.

Meanwhile, in the Bruce Black Box Theatre at Open Space for Arts & Community, actor, writer, and director Randy Noojin will use Pete Seeger’s music to spin stories about one of America’s most famous folk singers and social activists of the 1940s, 1950s, and turbulent 1960s.

In his one-person performance, Noojin takes on the character of Seeger, who made famous the civil rights anthem “We Shall Overcome” and wrote dozens of other folk tunes that became the soundtrack of a generation.

The Fest’s production of “Seeger” is also a co-production with Open Space for Arts & Community. Catch this show at 7:30 p.m. Friday, July 22, Friday, July 29 and Saturday, July 30. It will be performed at 2 p.m. on Sunday, July 24 and Sunday, July 31; and at 4 p.m. Saturday, July 23.

“Much Ado About Nothing” and “Seeger” are part of two full weekends of live theatre in three different Vashon locations. Performances in the meadow at Open Space will offer picnic-style meals Saturday and Sunday of each weekend from Mica’s Kitchen, Orca Eats Food Truck, Iyad’s Syrian Grill and Thyme Well Spent catering.

“Somewhere Between,” a brand-new New York-bound musical, will be staged at VCA’s Kay White Hall. (See page 10.) “Plays In A Snap” — a series of new play readings — return to the Black Cat Cabaret in the Snapdragon Bakery & Café with the café’s full bar and menu available for patrons.

Tickets are available for all performances at vashonrepertorytheatre.org.
