Sleeping Beauty Ballet

Sleeping Beauty ballet goes en pointe at Blue Heron Blue Heron Dance Company, comprised of 50 advanced dancers, will perform the “The Sleeping Beauty” ballet at Vashon High School theater. Performances will be at 7 p.m. Friday and Saturday, May 9 and 10, and at 2 p.m. Sunday, May 11. The score for the three-act ballet is considered by many critics to be one of Tchaikovsky’s finest works. “I chose this ballet because we have so many advanced dancers. It is a complex and challenging ballet,” said Vashon Allied Arts Dance Director Christine Juarez. “Those who saw it 10 years ago will see a very different piece this time.” Blue Heron Dance Company includes students in Ballet 2, 3, 4 and 6, and Modern 1, 2 and 3. In the first portion of the program, younger students will perform excerpts from Balanchine’s “A Midsummer Night’s Dream,” Ashton’s “La Fille Mal Garde” and and the “Rose Adagio” from “Sleeping Beauty.” The youngest dancers, always a crowd-pleaser, will perform “The Fairies and the Dragon,” a storytelling piece about accepting differences. Sarah Balcom, as Sleeping Beauty, will be in good company with a large group of experienced dancers, including many Vashon High School juniors who have danced together since childhood. Molly Crosby will dance the part of the Lilac Fairy. Other fairies include Chelsea Clark, Sami Ressler, Amorita Juarez, Camille Kappelman, Sophie Pawlowski, Madeline Morser, Clarissa Boyajian, Trudy Soriano and Shannon Hennessey, who plays the pivotal role of the Black Fairy. Juarez will present Ten Year Tiaras, for the first time this year, to students who have danced 10 consecutive years with Blue Heron Dance. “This is a way to recognize commitment and consistency and to show the kind of dancing that persistence can reap,” said Juarez.
