This weekend kicks off the first summer Vashon Island Art Studio Tour, a beloved tradition typically held in May and December.

Artists will open their studios for visitors to experience what board member Janice Randall described in a press release as “the rich artistic spirit that makes Vashon a legendary creative haven.”

The tour will run from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays, June 18, 19, 25 and 26.

Visitors can chart a course from Vashon’s north to south end using the colorful Studio Tour maps available at most island businesses. More than 40 artists will exhibit work in 20 studios for residents and visitors alike to see where the art starts — the paintings, photography, ceramics, jewelry, textiles, mosaic, glass and more.

Willow Street Woodshop, at Vashon’s northern tip, will feature garden birdhouses by Julie King, functional art from cutting boards to earrings by Paula Allegrini and stained glass décor by KB Jones.

Farther south, Empty Nest Studio will show Sheree Tomoson’s gemstones, mixed metal and beach glass jewelry; David Erue’s one-of-a-kind metal sculptures and gates and Margaret Bickel’s vintage glass flower yard art.

Morgan Brig’s studio in the Judd Creek area will exhibit her new work of small mixed media masks, copper and found object figures and houses.

Three studios along Quartermaster Harbor will show paintings by Pam Ingalls — the artist’s first time in a dozen years exhibiting work outside of The Hardware Store Restaurant. Valerie Willson will share new abstract oils, photographs and a collection of older works in her garden cottage studio, and Penny Grist, an early Art Studio Tour member and avid gardener, will show colorful mosaic sculptures, wall hangings and garden rocks. Inside Grist’s studio, Larry Muir’s sterling pendants, rings, bracelets and earrings with semi-precious stones will be on display.
