Put on your dancing shoes

As usual, the Red Bicycle Bistro will rock this weekend. 

Cordaviva, a nine-piece dance band that plays music influenced by African and Latin styles, will take the stage at 9 p.m. Friday, July 22. The band features vocalists who sing in several languages, a powerhouse horn section, driving percussion, and soulful guitars. The band has performed at such notable Seattle venues as The Triple Door, The Tractor Tavern, and ACT Theatre. 

A six-member Vashon band, Shark Biscuit, will play surf rock at the Bike at 8:30 p.m. Saturday, July 23. Fans of Dick Dale, The Ventures and Herb Alpert and the Tijiuana Brass should check out the show and bring along their dancing shoes. 

Both the Friday and Saturday shows are free and open to all ages until 11 p.m., and 21 and older after that. 

Liturgical dancer depicts life of Mary Magdalene

Acclaimed dancer and storyteller Betsey Beckman will perform a liturgical dance in honor of the feast of St. Mary Magdalene at 10:15 a.m. Sunday, July 24, at the Church of the Holy Spirit. 

Beckman, who is regularly featured as an artist and presenter at national conventions and churches, has explored the stories of women in the Bible for more than 30 years. Her devotion to Mary Magdalene has taken her to France for two pilgrimages. See Beckman’s website, www.thedancingword.com, for more information.

Music from Down Under comes to Café Luna 

Asa Broomhall, an Australian singer and songwriter, will appear in a free show at 7 p.m. Friday, July 22, at Café Luna. Broomhill’s music combines rock and roll with hints of folk, blues, country and even a little calypso. He’ll have copies of his latest album, “Revelry Road,” at the show on Friday. 

Americana music festival

Vashon Allied Arts will offer something new this year — an Americana Music Festival, set for 5 to 8 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 6, at Camp Burton’s outdoor amphitheater.

Americana music is a hybrid form of music steeped in blues, roots, bluegrass and traditional country. 

Performers will include the duo of Stacey Earle and Mark Stuart, singer/songwriter Rachel Harrington and her band, the Do Right Boys and The Magpies, a trio comprised of Island guitarist Steve Amsden, bassist Dan Brown and fiddler Jean Richstad. For more information visit www.vashonalliedarts.org.

A benefit billed as the “First Occasional Fundraising Trivia Night for Vashon Island Chorale” will take place at 6:30 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 27, at Bethel Church.
