Almost 80 Islanders who are part of the Vashon Island Chorale will raise their voices in the choir’s spring concert, set for 7:30 p.m. Saturday, April 9, and 3 p.m. Sunday, April 10, at Bethel Church. 

Under the direction of Gary D. Cannon, the chorale will perform “Brahms’ Requiem,” a choral masterpiece that will feature solos by Vashon Opera stars Jennifer and Andrew Krikawa. 

Adding to the performance will be Linda Lee and Evan Stults, who will provide accompaniment on “piano four-hands” — meaning that both pianists will share one keyboard.

The choir will also sing the work as it was written in German.

Cannon explained that this version of the “Requiem” was published in 1869 and was used for the work’s first performance in Britain.

“Brahms’ reduced version … allows non-symphonic choirs — such as the Vashon Island Chorale — to present a masterwork which would otherwise be logistically and financially unfeasible,” he said. 

Cannon is excited to present the concert.

“The Requiem is perhaps Brahms’ most personal work, and in this version we hear layers of nuance which are generally hidden by the full orchestra,” he said.
