Vashon venues beckon with options for New Year’s Eve

Portage Fill, Vashon Chorale and Mercado Central will headline a New Year’s Eve Ball at Open Space for Arts & Community on Dec. 31.

The event will feature celebrations of a New York, Chicago and Seattle New Year and music that runs the gamut from big band to spicy Latin.

First, Portage Fill will play danceable songs from its vast repertoire at 8 p.m., followed by a set by the chorale. Finally, Mercado Central, a Latin band made up of members of the popular ensemble Picoso, will close the night with more dance tunes.

To celebrate the New York New Year at 9 p.m., aerialists Lynelle Sjoberg and Janet McAlpin will perform a piece the duo prepared especially for the New Year’s Ball.

Child care will be offered on site until 10 p.m. for children ages 3 to 12. Doors open at 7:30 p.m., with live music from 8 p.m. until 12:30 a.m. Tickets, $20 for adults and $10 for children, are available at Books by the Way, Vashon Bookshop and online at brownpapertickets.com.

Red Bicycle

The Red Bike will come alive on New Year’s Eve with music by Adrian Xavier, Sarah Christine and DJ Sticky, beginning at 9:30 p.m.

DJ Sticky will open the show with positive hip-hop, dance hall, roots and reggae tunes.

Xavier, whose reggae is infused with soul, folk, jazz, rock and hip-hop, will play with an all-star cast of musicians, including Jamaican-born Lennox Holness on bass, Paul Huplar on drums, Brian Ray on guitar and Bob Antolin on saxophone and flute.

And lyricist Sarah Christine will also take the stage, bringing her mountain- and water-influenced tunes to the waiting ears of the New Year’s Eve revelers.

This event is for partygoers 21 and older only. Cover is $15.

Sportsmen’s Club

The Vashon Sportsmen’s Club will feature live entertainment on New Year’s Eve by The Spotlights, accompanied by oysters, champagne, hors d’oevres and games. Tickets, $20, can be purchased at the door. The Sportsmen’s Club is located on Singer Road, just south of the entrance to Vashon Cemetery.
