Theater Director Anthony Winkler has only lived on Vashon for a few years, but he’s taken note of how islanders value self-sufficiency. In that spirit, he decided the island needed its own annual telling of Charles Dickens’ holiday classic “A Christmas Carol,” which he renamed “Scrooge of Vashon: A Chorus of Voices.”
The staged reading, the first performance in Bruce’s Black Box Theatre in Open Space for Arts & Community, will happen at 7:30 p.m. Saturday and 4 p.m. Sunday.
Winkler said he chose to adapt the tale because of its richness.
“Dickens’ literary turns and descriptive passages of character, place and supernatural situation are a pleasure to read and hear,” he said.
The cast will include Jeanne Dougherty, Tami Brockway Joyce, Maria Glanz, Amy Broomhall, Robin Jones, Gina Winkler, Anthony Winkler, David Mielke, Michael Shook, Craig Sutherland, Harris Levinson and Aimée van Roekel.
Winkler is no stranger to the art of the stage. He co-founded Seattle’s Theater Schmeater, worked as an artist, educator and administrator with Youth Theatre Northwest, Book-It Repertory Theatre and Seattle Children’s Theatre. He is on the board of the 14/48 Projects, which will be staged at Open Space in January.
“My goal is to keep this production from seeming like it takes place somewhere other than the world in which the audience lives,” he said. “I hope we gain the perspective to change for the better the ways we share being in the world together.”
Tickets are $10 and sold at Vashon Bookshop and brownpapertickets.com.
