Weekend brings several concerts

Let’s hear it for the kids

Students of Island guitarist Ken Jacobsen will perform at 8:30 p.m. Friday, March 11, at Red Bicycle Bistro. This concert, featuring the next generation of Island talent, will include everything from jazz standards to classic rock. The young players will be  backed by an all-star band of Island musicians, with songs from a diverse array of musicians including The Beatles, Hendrix, The Police and Nirvana.

“Past shows have been crowded and raucous, so get there early, scream a lot, and help support Vashon youth,” said concert organizer Pete Welch.

Hillstomp plays the Bike

Hillstomp, a high-octane music act from Portland, Ore., will play at 8:30 p.m. Saturday, March 12, at Red Bicycle Bistro. Island guitarist Phil Royal will open the show, which has a $5 cover charge and is for all ages until 11 p.m. and 21 and older after that.

“Pretty much every time Hillstomp has visited Vashon, they’ve blown the lid off the Red Bicycle,” said concert organizer Pete Welch.

Hillstomp’s Facebook page describes the duo’s music as “North Mississippi trance blues, a bit of Appalachia, and a dash of punkabilly … clanging and tumbling from assorted buckets, cans and BBQ lids, all drenched in rambunctious slide guitar.”

A Free Range choir concert

Vashon’s Free Range Folk Choir will present a concert featuring music from South Africa, Bulgaria and the United States at 7 p.m. Saturday, March 12, at Vashon Methodist Church. Under the direction of Shane Jewell, the choir celebrates the ways that music from around the world can lift the spirit and cultivate community. Admission is free, but donations in support of the event are welcome. For more information, visit www.freerangefolkchoir.blogspot.com.
