Two island schools recently held auctions to raise money for the continued education of young islanders and together raised nearly $200,000.

Harbor School’s annual Voyagers Auction: 20 Years of Wonder was held on Saturday, April 2, at the Open Space for Arts & Community and raised more than $125,000.

More than 200 guests consisting of current parents, alumni parents, alumni, faculty, trustees and supporters turned out to support the programs and students at Harbor School and Carpe Diem Primary.

As a newly merged kindergarten through eighth grade school, there was much to celebrate, as this year marks the school’s 20th anniversary. The event broke a fundraising record, with more than $40,000 raised during the Special Appeal Paddle Raise to support financial aid.

The event was hosted by island artists Kevin Joyce and Martha Enson of EnJoy Productions. Alumna Sophia Ressler, class of 2001, was the guest speaker, and Mark McGough (pictured), the incoming Head of School, joined the festivities as well.

The following weekend, on April 9, Vashon-Maury Cooperative Preschool wrapped up a 10-day online auction with a speakeasy-themed dinner and live auction at the Open Space.

Event organizer Anna Olive said Monday that funds were still being reconciled, but the online auction, sponsorships and live event netted at least $52,000.

The Hush Hush Club: A Night at the Speakeasy featured a live auction with Joyce and Enson, along with many 1920s Prohibition-themed events. From a wine and spirits grab

where attendees competed for first pick of choice beverages hidden in a bootlegger’s trench coat, to a Seattle Distilling cocktail bar and a musical performance by Delilah Pearl and the Mantarays, Olive said the event was “really fun.”

Funds from the auctions will go toward continued programming and learning opportunities at the schools.
