Learn to play the uke and squeezebox
Nova Devonie will return to the Island on Tuesday, Sept. 16, for a full day of private accordion lessons at Vashon Island Music.
More lessons will take place at the store on Saturday, Sept. 20, when Mike Bristow surfs over from Seattle for ukulele and slack-key guitar lessons.
Lessons from Devonie and Bristow cost $40 an hour.

Music on tap at Café Luna
A weekend full of music is coming up at Café Luna. Seattle singer-songwriter Kate Graves will perform a free show at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Sept. 12, at the café. There is no cover charge.
Bob Scott ’n the Pockets, an Island band that plays “sensual easy listening folk pop,” will play a free concert at the café at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 13.
Last call for new works
Sept. 27 is the deadline for Island performing artists of all disciplines to apply for Vashon Allied Arts’ New Works Series 2009.
The series offers the Blue Heron venue for artists to premiere new works in 2009.

Kids can kick up their heels
An Irish dancing class for children 5 and up meets at 10:15 a.m. every Saturday morning at Vashon Dance Academy. Sara Fogard teaches the class. For information, e-mail sarafogard@gmail.com.
Watermark at Back Bay
The band Watermark will play a show from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. Friday, Sept. 12, at Back Bay Inn. The band will play on the deck if the weather permits or inside the dining room if it doesn’t.
Make a joyful noise
The Vashon-Maury Chamber Orchestra will begin its season under the direction of Karin Choo, with music by Britten, Mendelssohn and Handel. All string players are welcome to play without audition.
Rehearsals are on Thursdays from 7 to 9 p.m. in the Vashon High School band room, beginning Sept. 18. For information, contact Mary Walker at 567-4533.
The Vashon Youth String Orchestra, under the direction of Gaye Detzer, will meet in the McMurray band room on Wednesdays from 3 to 5 p.m. Musicians 9 and up who have some experience with note-reading are invited to play with no audition. Younger players may play by special permission. There are openings for violins, violas, cellos and basses. The first rehearsal is Wednesday, Sept. 17. To register, contact Detzer at 567-5193.
