Beachcomber to move to tabloid format

The Vashon-Maury Island Beachcomber, starting with next week’s issue, will sport a new look and new size.

The paper is shifting from a broadsheet, its current size, to a tabloid, about seven inches shorter. The new size will be much more manageable for readers, particularly those who commute, said Lori Maxim, vice president of West Sound Newspaper Operations, Sound Publishing Inc., which owns a number of papers in the Puget Sound region, including The Beachcomber.

“Readers nowadays prefer tabloid newspapers because they are easier to carry and are more visually engaging,” Maxim said in making the announcement. “Our newspapers will continue to provide high-quality, local editorial content to readers.”

The move to a tabloid will also save newsprint and reduce the company’s printing costs, said Daralyn Anderson, The Beachcomber’s publisher.

“It makes enormous sense to cut our production costs and to reduce our impact on the environment,” Anderson said. “Newspapers across the country are trying to find ways to remain financially healthy. This is a step towards ensuring The Beachcomber’s long-term financial health.”

The change will take place with the May 27 issue.
