FRIDAY 3

Stone Age skills

Primitive skills expert Lynx Vilden will share her experiences with Stone Age living in a 90-minute slide show at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 3, at the Land Trust Building. A donation of $10 is suggested.

People will see how participants fared in the wild in the Kootenai River, the Yaak River and Twisp River projects. Her goal is to form a group prepared to live for a full year in a Stone Age living experiment.

Vilden will talk about the preparations necessary for four two-to-six week primitive living projects she has led in wilderness settings since 2001 as the Four Season Prehistoric Living Projects. Participants in those projects learned the necessary skills to live a Neolithic lifestyle in the mountains of the western United States for an extended period, including hunting and fishing techniques, food processing methods and hide preparation for clothes, footwear and utility purposes.

Vilden has taught and lectured on primitive living skills in the United States and Europe since 1991.

UPCOMING

Sheldon Solomon here

The Unitarian Fellowship will sponsor a conversation with Sheldon Solomon at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 8, at McMurray Middle School.

Solomon is professor of psychology and interdisciplinary studies at Skidmore College in upstate New York. Solomon provides a comprehensive, accessible and often humorous overview of the ideas of Ernest Becker, a cultural anthroplogist.

Organizers say Solomon is popular with audiences. He will present research demonstrating that subtle reminders of our own death, such as the events of 9/11, increased Americans’ support for President Bush and his policies in Iraq and more recent studies documenting the psychological commonalities between conservative Americans and Islamic fundamentalists. The implications of these findings for democratic political institutions, the 2008 presidential elections and constructive approaches to the “war on terrorism” will be considered.

Contact Wendy Wharton for additional information at 799-9433.

Recycle electronics

Vashon Reclaim and Recycle will host a collection day for computers and electronics from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 11, behind Keller Williams and will accept all electronic devices for a small fee.

For more information, contact Terry Vanderwaal at 280-4975 or see www.vashonreclaim.com.
