Fight cancer

The American Cancer Society is looking for volunteers and teams for the first Relay for Life on Vashon Island this summer, at a date yet to be determined.

Organizers are holding an information meeting at 7 p.m. tonight, Jan. 28, at the commons at Vashon High School.

Relay for Life is an overnight event that mobilizes communities throughout the country to celebrate survivors (anyone who has ever been diagnosed with cancer), remember loved ones lost, commit to fight back through healthy lifestyle changes and raise money for the fight against cancer.

Volunteers are needed to organize and recruit teams, seek community support, coordinate logistics, find refreshments and prizes, plan entertainment and lend their support.

To RSVP for tonight’s meeting or volunteer on the Relay for Life committee, contact Tracy Weidel at 674-4120 or visit www.RelayForLife.org/VashonIslandWA.

UPCOMING

Horse farm tour

Horses for Clean Water and the King Conservation District will conduct a tour of a 12-acre Vashon commercial horse property that works hard to maintain the heath of its natural features as well as the health of its Dutch Warmbloods. Participants will see pastures interspersed amongst mature fir and cedar trees, mud-free sacrifice areas, winter turnouts and a covered arena. An ecology block bin collects stall waste for give-away to Island growers. Horse aficionados can observe chore-efficient horse management techniques that make horse life easier and reduce environmental impacts.

Participants can win a coupon for $100 off expenses to install barn gutters, exclusion fencing, winter paddocks or other best management practices.

The tour will be held at Paxhia Farms from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday, Feb. 7.

Register and get directions with the King Conservation District at 425-277-5581, ext. 122, or paul.borne@kingcd.org.
