WIC program here

The Women, Infants and Children program (WIC) provides free vouchers for nutritious foods as well as nutrition education for qualifying low-income pregnant and breastfeeding women and their infants and children up to age 5.

The clinic is held the third Wednesday of every month from 9 a.m. to noon and 1 to 2:30 p.m. This month the date is today, Feb. 18.

A registered dietician, social worker and public health nurse are available through this program. The clinic is located at the Vashon Methodist Church, 17928 Vashon Hwy. S.W.

Toltec presentation

“Deepen Your Healing,” a talk by Toltec Shaman Heather Ash Amara will meet from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday, Feb. 20, at Vashon Zen Center, 20406 Chautauqua Beach Rd.

This talk is free for those who sign up for one or both of the Feb 21 Toltec workshops listed at right. For others, the cost is $15 in advance, $20 at the door.

Adopt-a-cat day

Vashon Island Pet Protectors (VIPP) hosts an Adopt-A-Cat Day every Saturday from 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. at its new adoption center at 12200 S.W. 243rd St.

Historical storytelling

Storyteller Debbie Dimitré will perform as historical figure Harriet Beecher Stowe, author of “Uncle Tom’s Cabin,” at 7 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 21, at the Methodist Church. This book about the mistreatment of slaves was published in 1852, and some say that the book helped to launch the Civil War. Dimitré will also tell the story of Harriet Tubman, an African-American runaway slave who helped hundreds of runaway slaves escape along the Underground Railroad.

This historical drama is presented by Lighthouse Theatre in honor of Black History Month. Tickets are $10 at the door. A post-play discussion will follow the performance.

Winter Feast closes

The Winter Feast for the Soul celebrates the end of 40 days of personal practice for peace with poetry, dance and a short guided heart meditation for peace at 7 p.m. Monday, Feb. 23, at the Land Trust Building.

Time will be set aside for personal sharing of the 40-day experience.

Stretching dollars

A presentation, “Family Budgets in Tight Economic Times,” will be from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 25, at the VYFS Play Space at Gorsuch Road and Vashon Highway. Guest speaker Lori Harris will present on the topic.

Those who are or will be parenting children and looking for ways to stretch their dollars are all welcome. Refreshments will be available. Guests are asked to bring a favorite dish or food item for a potluck if they can.

The event is sponsored by Vashon’s Fostering Together Network, a collaboration of current and potential foster and adoptive parents, relative caregivers and other community members who otherwise support children in foster care.

Creative gardening

Michelle Crawford of Pacific Potager will present a talk on creative gardening from 1 to 3 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 28, at Books by the Way. Drawing on 20 years of experience in the Pacific Northwest, Michelle will discuss the French potager approach to gardening — that a garden can be practical and an attractive part of your property. The talk is free and reservations are not required.

Internet safety

An Internet safety lecture, presented by Seattle police detective Garry Jackson, will meet from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday, March 3, at McMurray Middle School.

Islanders can join The Harbor School and McMurray Middle School for an informative presentation on Internet safety issues relevant to school-age children. Jackson will cover topics including risk awareness, social networking issues and safety, cyberbullying, Internet safety rules and monitoring and supervision.

Flea markets

In March, Vashon will be home to two flea markets.

The first, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, March 8, is presented by the Open Space for Arts and Community — or O — at 18870 S.W. 103rd St.

Vendor spaces are available by calling Karen Biondo at 408-7241.

Organizers promise food, music and diverse entertainment.

The entrance fee for shoppers and browsers is $3 or a donation of food for the Vashon food bank.

The Vashon Youth Council will present a weekly flea market beginning the weekend of March 14 and 15 in the lot just north of Pandora’s Box. The market will open at 9 a.m. with closing times varying throughout the year.

There is no entrance fee for shoppers. Vendor booths are available by calling Sheila McGuffin at 719-2691 or e-mailing vashonfleamarket@gmail.com.

Science Fair

The annual Science Fair will be Saturday, April 18. Entry forms and information packets are available at the Vashon Library during the month of February.
