Vashon Audubon will welcome University of Washington atmospheric scientist Cliff Mass at 7 p.m. Thursday, May 22. His topic will be “The Great Windstorms of the Pacific Northwest.”

The event will be at the Land Trust Building located at 10014 S.W. Bank Rd. The event is free, and all are welcome.

Book group meets

Vashon Bookshop’s book club meeting was postponed last week. The new meeting time is at 7 p.m. Thursday, May 22. The group will discuss “Secrets in the Fire” by Henning Mankell.

Farmers Market

The Vashon Farmers Market will be open from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday May 24, in the Village Green.

The Farmers Market will launch its 2008 music program this Memorial Day weekend with local acoustic band BeSides at 11 a.m.

Farmers will sell Vashon-grown plant starts, trees, native plants and perennials, as well as flowers, meat, milk, eggs, wine, cheese and spring produce, including asparagus, salad mix, radishes, spinach and arugula.

Island crafters will display and sell Island-made artwork, children’s clothing and toys, jewelry, soaps, essential oils, specialty chocolates, Island-roasted coffee beans, cutting boards, incense and cards.

Others will sharpen knives and give massages. The Monkey Tree will sell soup, croissants, fresh bread and other good food.

Kite day

Kite flyers and friends are welcome at Kite Day at Point Robinson from noon to 4 p.m. Saturday, May 24.

The Ship’s Store in the lighthouse will be open for the sale of kites and nautical items; tours of the lighthouse will go on all afternoon, and there will be music as well.

‘Pinocchio’

More than 100 dancers of Vashon Dance Academy will showcase their talents in an elaborate production of “Pinocchio” on May 30, 31 and June 1 at the Vashon High School theater. Shows are 7:30 p.m. Friday, 1:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. Saturday, and 1:30 p.m. Sunday.

Tickets are currently on sale at Books by the Way and will be sold at the door at $12 for adults and $10 for students 18 and under.

Most shows sell out; early ticket purchase is suggested.

Sock hop benefit

Quake, Rattle and Roll, a benefit sock hop harkening back to the 1950s and ’60s, will be from 7 to 11 p.m. Saturday, May 31, at the K2 Commons.

The evening is a benefit for the third transmission tower for Voice of Vashon so that the station can transmit information to the entire Island in an emergency.

The evening will include DJ Prince Voltaire, door prizes, food, drinks, fun, games, mini-auction and a monster tower building contest.

Tickets are $10 per person at the door, Vashon Bookshop and Books by the Way.

Cindy Sheehan visits

Islanders are invited to an afternoon with Cindy Sheehan from noon to 2 p.m. Sunday, June 8, at the Vashon High School.

She will speak on “A Revolution of Values: Moving from a War Economy to a Peace Economy.”

Sheehan, an anti-war leader, is challenging Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi for Congress.

Tickets are $10 to $25 on a sliding scale and can be purchased at the Vashon Bookshop or Books by the Way.
