Wednesday market
The Vashon Farmers Market will be open from 2 to 5 p.m. Wednesday, July 23, in the Village Green.
Farmers will sell Island-grown loganberries, raspberries, sweet cherries, pie cherries, peas, broccoli, carrots, potatoes, garlic, salad greens, lettuce and more. Black Dog Nursery will bring a wide range of perennials.
Artist Anne Gordon will sell her whimsical cards with Vashon scenes.
Vashon Park District’s Tunes@ Noon program will provide music on the Green between noon and 3 p.m.

Farmers Market
The Vashon Farmers Market will be open from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, July 26, in the Village Green.
Farmers will sell Island-grown meats including lamb and chicken, milk, eggs, cheese, pesto, pâte, loganberries, raspberries, sweet cherries, pie cherries, peas, broccoli, carrots, potatoes, garlic, salad greens, lettuce and more.
A wide range of crafts will be sold, all made on Vashon Island, and services provided will include knife sharpening, massage, face painting and haircuts.
At 10:30 a.m. Jenni Wilke of Books by the Way will read stories for children. Between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. the market will welcome the Seattle band the Bay City Ramblers.

Master gardeners
Master gardeners will be available from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, July 26, in front of True Value. They will help answer gardening questions, including those about invasive plants and ways to control them.
Stop by for gardening advice, plant disease identification, available resource materials and more.
Adopt-a-cat day
Vashon Island Pet Protectors (VIPP) hosts an adopt-a-cat day every Saturday from 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. at Pandora’s Box.

Salmon bake
St. John Vianney Catholic Church invites the community to a salmon bake, featuring delicious food, live music and family fun.
This year’s salmon bake is slated for 1:30 to 4:30 p.m. Sunday, July 27, on the church grounds at 15100 115th Ave. S.W.
The menu will include marinated grilled salmon, garlic bread, baked beans, green salad, iced tea or lemonade and ice cream. Hots dogs will be available as an alternative to salmon. Music will be provided by Loose Change, a well-known Island dance band.
The afternoon will also feature an array of children’s activities.
Tickets are on sale now at Windermere, Vashon Pharmacy and St. John Vianney Church. Advance tickets cost $18 for adults, $15 for seniors 55 and older and $5 for children ages 5 through 12. Children under 5 are admitted free.
Opera preview
The Vashon Library will offer an opera preview with Norm Hollingshead at 2 p.m. Sunday, July 27. He will preview “Aida” by Giuseppe Verdi.
Glorious pageantry, rousing choruses and a basketful of great tunes elevate the moving tale of forbidden love between a general and slave girl in ancient Egypt.
The grandest of all grand operas, “Aida” is also an intensely personal love story overflowing with passions as up to the minute as our own.
Verdi’s power to translate human emotion into magnificent music was at its zenith when he created this masterwork, arguably, according to opera fans, the best evening’s entertainment he ever devised.

Backyard Safari
The Vashon Library will host “Backyard Safari: Celebrating Nature All Around You” at 3 p.m. Monday, July 28, in the Ober Park performance room next door to the library.
It will be presented by Dennis Westphall and Lorraine Bayes, the founders of Tickle Tune Typhoon, for kids ages 2 and older.
Kids and caregivers are invited to this interactive concert featuring colorful costumes and Earth-friendly songs that teach about insects, animals, trees, recycling and conservation.

Flower Fair
The Vashon-Maury Island Garden Club will hold its annual Flower Fair from 1 to 6 p.m. Friday, Aug. 1, and from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 2, in the meeting room of the Vashon Library.
The club invites the community to join them in celebrating the color and abundance of summer gardens and to gather inspiration and ideas.
Specimens on display will include annuals, perennials, herbs, grasses, shrubs and vegetables from club members’ gardens. Most specimens will be identified with both common and botanical names.
There will also be examples of flower arranging.
Visitors are invited to vote for their favorites in each category.

Library LateNight
LateNight @ the Library for kids in grades six through 12 will meet from 6 to 10 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 2, at the Vashon Library.
Get a henna tattoo or limber up with Dance Dance Revolution and Guitar Hero open play. Participate in the Vashon Library Cyber Cafe, surf the Web, or play a game.
There will be refreshments and door prizes. Security will be provided.

Storyteller Merna Ann Hecht and musician Carolyn Candy will present “Tales and Tunes for a Summer’s Morning” at Vashon Bookshop at 11 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 12. All ages are welcome.

‘Virginia V’ cruise
Tickets are available for the Sunday, Aug. 17, cruise aboard the steamer “Virginia V,” sponsored by the Vashon Maury Island Heritage Association.
The around-the-Islands cruise on a National Historic Landmark vessel will depart from Vashon’s north-end passenger ferry dock at 1 p.m. and return around 5:30 p.m.
Tickets are $60 for Heritage Association members and $75 for non-members.
