Youth orchestra plays

Vashon Youth String Orchestra presents a short concert at 7 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 15, in the McMurray multipurpose room. This group is made up of 19 string students from third- to seventh-grade. They will be joined by the Teen String Ensemble, made up of Lena DeGuzman, Melanie Taitano, Denise Griffith and Kieran Kim-Murphy, who will play music by Vivaldi.

Both groups are directed by Gaye Detzer. Admission is by donation.

Adopt-a-cat day

Vashon Island Pet Protectors (VIPP) hosts an Adopt-A-Cat Day every Saturday from 11:30 am. to 2:30 p.m. at its new adoption center at 12200 S.W. 243rd St.

Tea ceremony

Paul Motoyoshi will present a traditional Japanese tea ceremony honoring the new year at 4 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 17. The event will be held at the Vashon Tea Shop.

Inaugural ball

Vashon’s first Inaugural Ball will be from 6:30 to 10:30 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 20, at the Open Space for Arts and Community, 18870 S.W. 103rd St.

The party will be a chance to come together as a community to celebrate, have fun and dance. The Portage Philharmonic 16-piece swing band will play, followed up by some live DJ action, and there will be wine, beer, memorabilia and “All-American” food for purchase.

Tickets are $20 to $15 on a sliding scale. Seniors and students are $15, and children under 10 are free.

Tickets will be available at the door or in advance at Books by the Way or from any Team “O” member.

Everyone is invited to wear their best Vashon fashion.

Child care is available on-site for a small fee.

WIC program

The Women, Infants and Children food program (WIC) provides free vouchers for nutritious foods as well as nutrition education for qualifying low-income pregnant and breastfeeding women, infants and children up to age 5. The clinic is held the third Wednesday of every month from 9 a.m. to noon and 1 to 2:30 p.m. This month the date is Jan. 21.

Access to a registered dietitian, social worker and public health nurse is available through this program. Medical coupon applications are available for children and pregnant women.

The clinic is located at the Vashon Methodist Church, 17928 Vashon Hwy. S.W. For appointments, call 296-4822.

Book club

Stranger Than Fiction, Vashon’s newest book store, has begun a book group called Roll’n & Scroll’n. It will meet the first Tuesday of every month at 6 p.m.; in February, the date is Feb. 3.

High school tours

Tours of Vashon High School will be held from 10 to 11:30 a.m. every Wednesday starting today, Jan. 14 through Feb. 2, and from 1 to 2:30 p.m. Saturday, Jan 24.

All tours meet in the Vashon High School gym foyer, and all Islanders are welcome to take the tour, particularly those weighing their votes on the proposed bond issue for a new school.

Library story times

The Vashon Library will offer several story times this month.

Toddler Story Times will meet at 10:40 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 20 and 27. It is for ages 18 months to 3 years with an adult.

Preschool Story Time will meet at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 20 and 27, for ages 3 to 5.

Baby and Me Story Times will meet at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 14, 21 and 28, for babies from newborn to 18 months old with an adult.

Acupuncture

The Community Acupuncture Clinic at Paradise Ridge Acupuncture Herbs and Massage meets from 2:30 to 5:30 p.m. every Tuesday.
