Deadline extended for comments on lowering speed limit north of town

Public comments on the Department of Transportation's proposal to decrease the speed limit on a stretch of Vashon Highway will be accepted until Friday, Sept. 23.

Public comments on the Department of Transportation’s proposal to decrease the speed limit on a stretch of Vashon Highway will be accepted until Friday, Sept. 23.

The plan calls for the speed limit to be lowered to 45 mph, down from the current 50 mph limit, from just north of SW 156th Street to Burma Road.

Earlier this month, transportation officials indicated the deadline for comment would be Sept. 2. The department’s spokesperson, however, said that some islanders had indicated they did not have enough notice about the proposed change, so the deadline was extended.

The initial announcement about the proposal indicated the department had received complaints about motorists traveling at unsafe speeds in that area. After further study, the department recommended lowering the limit.
