Dockton Store owners seeking information about hit and run

The owners of the Dockton General Store building are asking members of the public to come forward with any information they may have about a hit and run over the weekend that damaged the building’s awning support and mailbox.

According to Nancy O’Brien, who owns the building with her husband, Chris O’Brien, their contractor stopped by the building at 8 a.m. Sunday and again at 8 a.m. Monday. On Monday he determined that a car had crashed into the building sometime after his Sunday morning visit, knocking over the mailbox post and a support for the front awning before driving away. There are tire marks on the ground in front of the building and paint from the car on the mailbox post.

“I’m just kind of upset they didn’t leave a note,” Nancy O’Brien said.

She and her husband have been working on remodeling the property since they bought it in June. Working with island contractor Don Roberts, they are planning on turning it into a storage space and display area for Chris’ 25 vintage motorcycles. Nancy said the space will also serve as a sort of office for her husband and, when he’s not using it, a guest house for island visitors such as speakers and artists.

“My husband is retiring in April,” Nancy said. “We’re definitely retiring on Vashon.”

The couple, who currently lives in San Diego, has owned a house in Luana Beach for the past five years.

Islanders with information about the hit and run should email Nancy at njp55@cox.net.

Those interested in seeing what the couple has been doing with the building are invited to an open house from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 29.

RSVP by emailing Nancy at the address noted in the story.
