Facing challenges, island family seeking community’s support

In the midst of numerous difficulties including a cancer diagnosis, dying family member and sudden housing change, an island family is in need of help.

Kathi and Russ Ray have two children and Russ is a teacher at the Harbor School. Kathi was recently diagnosed with cancer and is dealing with a dying parent out of state. Recently, their landlord decided to sell their rental and the family has until Aug. 1 to find a new home. In recognition of the struggles the family is facing, islander Carolyn Shilling Gill created a page to raise money for the family. As of Monday, the YouCaring page had garnered $4,705 of the $5,000 goal.

But the family is in need of more than financial support, Gill said. They are also seeking volunteers. Those willing to lend money, a temporary rental, muscle or vehicles to move or time to help pack should contact Russ at Proferussellray@gmail.com or 405-476-5029.
