Fire at transfer station a warning that conditions are still hazardous

On the morning of Sept. 27, Vashon Island Fire & Rescue responded to a brush fire at the transfer station, above.

Assistant Chief Bob Larsen said it started with a spark from a chainsaw, then spread in the gusting wind. He cautioned islanders that even though the King County fire marshal recently removed the burn ban, island brush remains dry in some areas, even after the rain that has fallen since then.

“We are starting to get moisture, but it is still dry out there,” he said.

Late Monday afternoon, the fire department also responded to a car fire in the north-end ferry line. No one was hurt.
