A fire caused considerable damage to a house on the south end of the island on Wednesday.

Vashon Island Fire & Rescue was called to the home in the 12600 block of 267th Place at 1:45 p.m. and extinguished the blaze, but much of the home and many belongings were destroyed, Interim Assistant Chief of Operations Bob Larsen said. One of two residents was home at the time of the fire, and while there were no injuries, the damage was so extensive that the residents will have to move in with family, Larsen added.

Several members of the department were at the station for a class when the call came in and responded quickly to the blaze, Larsen said. He noted that fighting the fire was complicated by the home’s layout and by the fact that the house is well off the highway, requiring firefighters to lay a considerable amount of hose from the two water tenders to the fire.

As is typical, Larsen said, the department has called in investigators to determine the cause of the fire, which appeared to be accidental.
