Flu reaches epidemic levels in Washington

The flu is affecting Washington residents in high numbers this year, and public health officials are encouraging those who have not received a flu shot to do so.

The shots are available by appointment at the Neighborcare clinic and at the Vashon Pharmacy. Appointments are not needed at the store, but pharmacist Tyler Young encourages anyone who would like to get the vaccine to call ahead and ensure adequate staff are available. Additionally, he requested people choose times outside of the noon to 3 p.m. period.

At the clinic, Dr. Jessica Wesch said about 20 percent of the patients providers are seeing there with flu-like symptoms test positive for the illness.

“Absolutely, get a flu shot,” she said. “The flu is miserable, and it is a serious respiratory illness.”

In the Northwest, flu season typically peaks in January or February, she said, and the shot takes about two weeks to reach its full effectiveness.

A recent King 5 news story noted that the dominant flu strain this year is especially tough on seniors.
