School board meeting

School board meeting

The Vashon Island School District board meets at 7 p.m. tomorrow, Thursday, July 24, in Courthouse Square.

School officials will present the 2008-2009 district budget for approval to the board. The superintendent recommends approval of the budget as proposed.

Fire meeting at yacht club

The Vashon Island Fire & Rescue’s board of commissioners will hold its next meeting at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 5, at the Quartermaster Yacht Club located at 23428 Vashon Highway S.W.

The change in location is part of the board’s effort to try to ensure it’s hearing from residents who live in different parts of the Island.

Members of the public are welcome to attend and share their thoughts on the future of their fire department.

Open mic on Monday

An open mic — modeled after the popular monthly program at Vashon High School — will take place at 6:30 p.m. Monday, July 28, at the Village Green.

The lineup is still being finalized but will include a performance by Salivation, a classic rock group, said Danny Salonen, one of the organizers. Other performers are welcome but must first contact Danny or his brother David Salonen. There are no age constraints, and a broad spectrum of style and experience is encouraged.

For more information, contact the Salonen brothers at either dsalonen2@yahoo.com or dsalonen@gmail.com, or call Danny at (206) 963-6165 or David at 920-8890.

The Salonens said they hope to make open mics at the Village Green a summertime tradition.

Late pickup of Rotary berries

Due to later than usual ripening and some delivery issues, the Vashon Island Rotary Club’s fresh raspberries and blueberries will be available for pickup from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, Aug. 2 and 3, at Vashon Electric, on the south end of town.

The Vashon Rotary, which sells the berries as a fundraiser, also has a limited supply of frozen strawberries still available. Call Carolyn Amick at 463-3403 for questions or to place an order.

Watch for Island Child
