Donate school items soon

Islanders have one more week to participate in the Back-to-School Drive. Collection bins are set up at Thriftway, US Bank, John L. Scott (in town), Windermere and Essentials 4.

Tins are also at the Burton store and Books by the Way for those who prefer to donate cash or checks. The drive ends this Saturday, Aug. 23, when volunteers will collect donations at Thriftway.

The supplies will be distributed at the Vashon-Maury Community Food Bank from 10:45 a.m. to 1 p.m. and 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 27.

The school drive is sponsored by the Vashon PTSA, and all cash donations are tax-deductible.

School board

to meet

The Vashon Island School District board of directors will meet at 7 p.m. tomorrow, Aug. 21, at Courthouse Square.

The board will hear the superintendent’s report, including updates on the district’s bargaining agreement with the Vashon teacher’s union and the interlocal agreement between the school district and Vashon Park District.

Terry Lindquist, who plans to remain the district’s superintendent through June 30, 2009, will give a presentation about the search process the district needs to go through to secure a new superintendent for the next academic year. He said he hopes the search will begin next month.

‘Dockton 101’

The history of Dockton will be presented in a slide show at 7 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 23, at the Dockton Water Association building at 9710 S.W. Windmill St.

Dubbed ‘Dockton 101,’ the presentation aims to raise awareness of the rich cultural heritage of the waterfront community. The group behind the slide show hopes to garner support for its current endeavor — the design, creation and installation of 10 interpretive signs about Dockton’s history in a one-mile walking trail in Dockton.

The prelimimary design for the first sign will be unveiled at Saturday’s presentation. Eighty people are signed up; 20 more can be accommodated. Contact Anita Halstead at 463-1492 or e-mail her at anitahalstead@comcast.net. A $5 donation is requested.

Beachcomber e-mail problems

Over the weekend of Aug. 9 and 10, The Beachcomber experienced technical problems, and no one at the office received e-mail. We expect that there were many messages we never received.

People who sent an e-mail and did not get a response are requested to e-mail us again if the information is still timely.
