Firefighters to climb for cure

Firefighters from Vashon Island Fire & Rescue (VIFR) will take part in the Scott Firefighter Stairclimb at the 76-story Columbia Tower in downtown Seattle March 2. The event is a fundraiser for organizations seeking cures for leukemia, lymphoma and myeloma.

Firefighters will make the 788-foot climb in full bunker gear and breathing apparatus, collectively weighing about 50 pounds.

Public to discuss athletic facilities

Vashon Park District will host a public meeting at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 19, at Ober Park to discuss the Island’s athletic facilities.

The park district is inviting representatives from all Island athletic groups — youth and adult — to join park commissioners David Hackett and Joe Wald in an examination of existing athletic facilities on the Island and the potential for developing new facilities. The goal of the meeting is to share information with local athletic groups about developments under consideration by the park district and others, including associated costs; to outline potential grant resources; and to identify current and future needs of all Island athletic groups.

Community council meets

The Vashon-Maury Island Community Council will meet at 7:30 p.m. Monday, Feb. 18, at Courthouse Square.

The newly elected councilmember Hilary Emmer and interim councilmember Kyle Cruver will be introduced. And Ray Deardorf, planning director for Washington State Ferries, will give a presentation to the group.

Land use group to vet Glacier

The Vashon-Maury Island Community Council’s Land Use and Natural Resources Committee will meet at the Land Trust Building at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 20. Amy Carey from Preserve Our Islands will talk about issues related to nearshore protection and the proposed expansion of Glacier Northwest’s gravel mine.

Design Drama Dock posters

Islanders still have a chance to design the official poster for Drama Dock’s production of The Wizard of Oz.

Submissions must be on 8.5 by 11 inch paper, with names only on the back of the poster. Drop a poster off at the Vashon Bookshop by Friday, Feb. 22.
