Ferries running on new schedule

Washington State Ferries began the blue Winter 2008 ferry schedule on Sunday, Jan. 6. The schedule continues through March 29.

The winter season is traditionally a slow one for the ferry system. Hence, seasonal cuts and changes in service are made to save money. This is the fifth year in a row for these seasonal cuts, which save the ferry system approximately $500,000 each winter.

The weekend schedule for the Fauntleroy/Vashon/Southworth route changes: service is decreased from three vessels to two on Saturday and Sunday.

The blue winter schedule, No. 207, is available at all ferry terminals, at local libraries and on the ferry system’s Web site at:

Give feedback on rapid buses

King County Metro Transit is seeking community input as it works to design new RapidRide bus service connecting West Seattle and downtown Seattle.

The new streamlined bus service is scheduled to begin in 2011. The West Seattle RapidRide line would replace Metro’s current Route 54.

Metro’s initial plans call for buses to arrive on the route every 10 minutes during the busiest morning and evening travel hours and every 15 minutes during midday and evening hours.

The upcoming open houses and information tables for the West Seattle service will be:

• 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 24, in The Hall at Fauntleroy, Vashon Room, located at 9131 California Ave. S.W.

• 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 29, and noon to 3 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 30, in the West Seattle Senior Center Multi-Purpose Room, located at 4217 S.W. Oregon St.
