Snapdragon Trivia Night

A night of trivia, complete with prizes for winners, is planned at Snapdragon starting at 6 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 23.

Holiday Gingerbread Contest Display

Community members have until Friday, Dec. 24 to vote on their favorite gingerbread creations, currently on display in the lobby of Vashon Center for the Arts. Cast your ballots for “Best Vashon Landmark,” “Most Traditional Gingerbread House” and “Most Artistic Use of Gingerbread.” VCA is open Wednesday to Sunday 12 to 5 p.m.

Drive-up caroling on Christmas Eve

Vashon Lutheran Church will offer drive-up caroling from 4 to 5:30 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 24. Islanders can drive up the church’s driveway, at 18623 Vashon Hwy. SW, and join in singing carols and listening to readings of the Christmas story. Leaders of songs and readers will be masked and socially distanced while outdoors, with lyrics to the carols available to attendees. The church will also be open from 4 to 5:30 p.m. for those wishing to go in for quiet meditation time, and pastor Joe Kutzke will safely serve Communion to those who want it. Masks are required indoors.

“East of the Mountains” Encore Showing

Following a sold-out screening earlier this month, Vashon Theatre will present two encore presentations of “East of the Mountains” at 8 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 30 and 12 p.m. Friday, Dec. 31. The indy film, based on the novel by Northwest author David Guterson, stars Seattle acting icon Tom Skerritt, who has received rave reviews for his performance in the starring role; the film is edited by Vashon resident Eric Frith. New Year’s Eve Ball with DeVotchka

Kick-off the start of 2022 with DeVotchka at Vashon Center for the Arts. The Grammy-nominated band will perform and there will also be a party in the VCA’s atrium complete with live DJ and no-host bar, and toast at midnight. The ball begins at 8:30 p.m. Get tickets at vashoncenterforthearts.org.

The Metropolitan Opera’s “Cinderella” at Vashon Theatre

Start the new year with a screening of the Metropolitan Opera’s production of “Cinderella,” 10 a.m. Jan. 1, at Vashon Theatre. The production features Laurent Pelly’s storybook staging, presented with an all-new English translation in an abridged 90-minute adaptation, with mezzo-soprano Isabel Leonard in the title role. Open Space cancels New Year’s Bash

Open Space for Arts & Community has canceled its “ReNEWal” party planned for New Year’s Eve, due to COVID concerns. The annual party was most recently held in 2019.

Make Mochi at Mukai Farm & Garden

Stop by Mukai Farm & Garden on Saturday, Jan. 1, and make mochi. Guests can make kagami mochi, which consists of two patties topped with a mandarin orange. There will be opportunities to make non-traditional mochi creations as well, and visitors will be able to take everything home with them. A $5 donation is suggested.
