Women Hold the Key

Women Hold the Key has announced new programs, sessions, meet-ups, support groups and learning modules at Synergy Vashon, with all programs free for the entire month of January.

Community Council

Vashon-Maury Community Council’s (V-MCC) next meeting, at 7 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 19, will be held in person at the Land Trust Building, 10014 SW Bank Rd. and also online, with a Zoom link posted at tinyurl.com/46dwzke6. Guests will include U.S. Rep. Pramila Jayapal’s staff member, Palmira Figueroa, who will listen to islanders’ concerns about the Vashon Post Office. Also, learn what King County Roads says about dangerous stretches of roads, ask questions of Heather Volpe, of the King County Sheriff’s Office, and learn more about issues with Amerigas on Vashon.

Senior Center

Activities at Vashon Senior Center include Canasta (10:30 to 11:30 a.m. on Mondays); Senior Saints Haircuts (1 to 3 p.m. Mondays, call 206.463.5173 for an appointment); Chess (1 to 3 p.m. Thursdays), and a talk by Elsa Croonquist, of the Vashon Heritage Museum, at 1 p.m. Friday, Jan. 13.

Health Insurance

Sign up for health insurance, from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 18, at the Vashon Library. At the event, King County staffer Miguel Urquiza will also help islanders sign up for Orca Lift cards and food stamps.

Tree and Shrub Sale

Online ordering for Vashon-Maury Island Land Trust’s annual bare-root tree and shrub sale will continue through Jan. 29.

Ferries meeting

Washington State Ferries (WFS) will host a virtual community meeting at 6 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 12. Participants will be able to ask questions and provide comments.

Join marine team

The Coastal Observation and Seabird Survey Team will hold a free “Beached Bird and Marine Debris” surveyor training session from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 15, at the Land Trust Building, 10014 SW Bank Rd. Register by emailing coasst@uw.edu.

Recycling

Bring waste to the next First (&Third) Sunday Styrofoam and Plastics Recycling Event, from 10 to 2 p.m, Sunday, Jan. 15, at the Sheffield Building, 18850 103rd ave SW. We will also collect non-functional Christmas lights.

Brown Briefly

Join Brown Briefly hosts Truman O’Brien, Bruce Haulman, Craig Beles and Kevin Jones at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 17, on Voice of Vashon, 101.9FM, to hear Small Talk guests Diane Emerson and Jessica Anakar, who are, respectively, the president and a board member of the Vashon-Maury Community Council.

Art History Talks

Art historian Rebecca Albiani will lecture about Tina Modotti (1896-1942), who traveled to Mexico as Edward Weston’s apprentice, but then developed her own photographic vision. With subjects drawn from traditional Mexican life, Modotti’s photography had an important impact on Mexican art. The talk takes place at 11:30 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 18, at Vashon Center for the Arts. Woodworking Classes

Vashon MakerSpace will soon present three classes for adults ages 18 and older — Introduction to Woodworking, Build a Six Board Chest, and Hand Tool Woodworking, with classes starting the week of Jan. 23 and running until March 6. All classes are six sessions, with a fee of $225 plus materials.

Scholarship support is available. All instructors have years of experience as builders and woodworking instructors.
