IGA gets big grant to go solar

The grant, which is for a total of $706,860, will fund a 370,035-kilowatt hours solar array.

Local grocer Vashon Market Fresh IGA will receive a more than $700,000 grant from the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) to purchase and install a solar array for the store.

The grant, which is for a total of $706,860, will fund a 370,035-kilowatt hours solar array. It is projected to lead to nearly $70,000 savings per year.

The grant is part of the USDA’s Rural Energy for America Program (REAP), funded by the Biden administration’s Inflation Reduction Act. The funding is targeted toward Washington farmers, ranchers, agricultural producers and small businesses. The funding awards were first announced April 25 in celebration of Earth Day.
