The Vashon Maury Community Food Bank is asking islanders to load up donation bags with non-perishable foods and place them by their mailboxes on Saturday morning.

The Letter Carrier’s Food Drive is on Saturday and instead of taking food donations to the food bank or dropping them off at a collection site, this drive collects donations from mailboxes. Between now and Saturday, letter carriers will deliver donation bags to be filled with non-perishable food. On Saturday morning, islanders are urged to have the filled bags and placed next to their mailbox to be picked up by letter carriers and food bank volunteers.

Donations should consist of: peanut butter, tuna, canned beans, canned soups, chili/stew, canned fruits/vegetables, condiments/dressings, cooking oils, toiletries, pet food. Donations should not include home-canned goods, perishable foods (dairy products, eggs, frozen or refrigerated items) or opened packages.

For those who will be out of town or otherwise unable to leave a bag by the box, there will be collection bins at the Post Office, as well as Chase and US Bank, the week before and the week after the drive.
